The phrase "born once, die twice or born twice, die once" is a quotation from Martin Luther, but what does it mean? The Bible states that there are 2 forms of birth and 2 forms of death: physically and spiritually. Physical death is when your body stops working and spiritual death is spending eternity in hell separated from God. Physical birth is when you enter this world and spiritual birth is being born again.
But how can you be born again when you can’t reenter your mothers womb? Nicodemus asked the same thing in John 3:4, then Jesus replied saying you must be born of water and of spirit. Being born again means accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior and having a personal relationship with Him. When we become born again there is a change in the way we think, the way we manage our emotions, and the choices we make by our will.
Mind- “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is.” (Romans 12:2)
Emotions- “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.” “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
(Ephesians 4: 29, 31-32)
Will- “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
(Matthew 7:21)
If we aren’t born again, we’ll die twice; first physically then spiritually. But, if we are born again we will be untouched by the spiritual death and enter the kingdom of God, living eternally with Him in heaven.
