Parents Filled with Wonder

We have a number of people in our church who are going through the exciting, and sometimes stressful, stages of pregnancy. It is hard for me not to reminisce about my wife, Meredith, during her pregnancies. Every woman has a different experience when they are expecting a child, but Meredith would regularly comment that she "loved being pregnant". This, no doubt, has caused a lot of concern for me and the integrity of our bank account. Two kids is plenty (for now).

Watching Meredith go through child expectancy was a treat. You could see the love and affection she had for our unborn children throughout the entire process and it was amazing seeing the joy she felt at each new stage of development. Of course, when the kids were born, that excitement continued and I got to take part, seeing their first smiles, first laughs, and first steps. Watching them learn and grow... it fills you with amazement and wonder. Sure, sometimes they stumble and fall, sometimes they may even make you angry, but you love them and are filled with a special kind of joy watching them grow.

Sometimes I wonder how God looks at us as we stumble and grow. It is easy to get wrapped up in images of the judgmental God or the vengeful God, but we forget that God sees us as his own children ("For all those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons." Rm 8:14). Does God watch us with disdain and vengeance, or does he watch us (even as we stumble) and regard us with a special kind of love? Does he watch us stumble and simply walk away, or have a heart filled with joy when we get back up and continue to gain our footing?

This message is so overplayed that we sometimes disregard it: God. Loves. You. He loves you desperately. He loves you so much that he has given everything, and will do everything, just to see you reconciled to him.

Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children, and walk in love, as Christ also loved us and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God. [...] For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light ... (Ephesians 5:1-2, 8)

When we think of small children, we don't think of people who start out great at everything. Instead, we think of people who start out in a place of ignorance and learn over time how to walk and how to act. When the kids mess up, we don't hold it against them or throw our hands up as if all hope is lost. In the same way, God knows that we are going to stumble and fall. He knows we will screw up from time to time. He could throw his hands up in frustration and just "give up", but he doesn't. He helps us get back up and continue on our journey.

Find peace in the knowledge that you are a child of God. That identity as a child comes free of any obligation to be perfect or know exactly what to do or what to say at all times. We're going to mess up. God knows that. It is for this reason that Christ didn't pay a partial price on the cross: he covered our flaws and sins in their entirety, both past and future. Your mistakes do not define you any more than a child's missteps define them. You are defined by the design of the Creator which is marked on your heart and engrained in your mind. Live in peace, love, and joy as a child lives who is deeply loved by their father. You. Are. Loved.
